This may sound crazy, and many of my emacs friends will no doubt consider this to be heresy. Remember though that emacs has had decades to perfect its extensibility with perhaps thousands of talented programmers contributing to the libraries.

The DotNet IDE may not be able to compete with emacs for general editing, but when it comes to DotNet code, macros had a big role in pulling me towards the IDE. You can, after all, make it behave more like the one true editor :)
