Hack:   Taking the Bite Out of Backup
Subject:   psync v. rsync

What's the difference between psync and rsync and why are they separated by 56 other hacks?

I have used psync (hack 2) and rsync (hack 59) today to back-up Mac directories to a Windows share. They both work... sort of. Apparently file or directory names containing /, * or " make psync gag, though these names were easily changed. What I can't figure out is why psync insists that some files (about a third of the test archive: 2000 files) need to be updated with every run. rsync also seems to be writing more than necessary but I'm still trying it.
