Subject:   Where does a beginner start?

I realize O'Reilly is more for the seasoned tech and that your articles are geared to that level. I was hoping someone could comment on where a beginner should start. Object C and cocoa are the areas I would like to tackle. I have no real programming experience except for a project done in Hypercard's hypertalk language back in the day (which I'm sure doesn't even count). Is jumping in with object C the way to go or should I try another language first then apply what I have learned there to object C? ie What beginner programming books, site and or resources will help me learn object C and general programming techniques?
