I'd really like to stress that I really hate having to have quicktime (and the realplayer) on my machines to view video and I would REALLY prefer if folk were to use mpg instead.
Though my bias against quicktime really developed from when it had terrible version control and kept ruining the computer configurations of my friends and family (which I had to fix) and though this no longer seems to be the case; it is still a terribly inconsiderate program.
Both Quicktime and the Realplayer are large downloads, contain annoying install processes, and don't even allow you to bypass their continual requests to upgrade and register.
Worse, together with the windows media player which is also pretty intrusive, web users are continually coerced by the content providers to have all three on their systems.
While the media players fight for who gets to play the file it is the users computer configuration which suffers.
Since mpg is a perfectly good neutral format for video, I'd really prefer that attention be focused on how to use it properly, rather than how to propagate this problem.
I see the continuing fight of the media players one of the major problems that remain for computer users today.
Thanks for listening,
