I don't see destructive competition now. I worry about it for the future, if marketplaces get more competitive and it starts to look like a winner-takes-all dynamic. I always like to invert Kurt Vonnegut's warning at the end of Mother Night: "You are what you pretend to be, so you'd better watch what you pretend." This same dynamic can be used to make ourselves better than we might otherwise be. If we pretend to a conscientiousness and an idealism that seems excessive now, we may save ourselves from going down the slippery slope when the opportunity presents, as it inevitably will.
