I think the aims of Project Utopia are noble and hope the linux driver nightmare improves. Its a lot better for linux than other alternative operating systems though, and even if Utopia gains universal acceptance in the linux world, the availability of drivers for many devices will continue to be an issue.
I'd like to bring up the Uniform Driver Interface which would allow for portable binary drivers across platforms:
I like this idea because its aims are like those of Java only it targets a much smaller application space. This is anathema to Microsoft however and I'm sure this has something to do with its slow road to acceptance.
