I think the major problem with Tivo goes beyond the cost of getting up and running.
If you have a problem with your Tivo, you can't replace any hardware without breaking its warranty and without spending hours on the phone with support troubleshooting, just to be told that you it has to be replaced. Once you get your replacement system, which you hope will work, pray that it doesn't brake again, or it will be more phone support and more wait to get another replacement.
If you build your own box, you buy another part and replace it and you're good to go.
