Actually, the count of 8 that you see is not the number of volumes (this is coincidence) but the sum of all the file sizes (at the end of the part you quoted from the article, I wrote: "Total 72 gives me the amount of storage in blocks (each block is 1024 bytes) used by all the items in /Volumes.").
If you total the sizes of your volumes (not hidden), you'll get 8.
