I disagree with the conclusion "love the software, hate the hardware". Not only did the NeXT hardware look cool, of all the systems I've worked on (PC, Sun, HP, IBM, SGI), the NeXT was the most reliable and rock solid (except for the optical drive) of anything I've touched. I'd say that the biggest downfall of NeXT was the decision to sell only into the education channel to start. I'd love to find out the logic behind that decision, and if anyone knows where there is a more detailed history of NeXT, I'd love to read more about it.
