Using a stripped down Apache config (don't load modules you don't need) can give just as good performance as other "light-weight" we servers. When using the threaded mpm's in Apache 2 and being smart about CGI's (ie, use mod_perl or FastCGI; using mod_cache when appropriate), you can get the best of both worlds all within the same we server. As an added bonus, there is only one config to maintain. Apache can easily fill multiple Gig interfaces to thousands of simultaneous clients when correctly tuned.
