Getting the Video out of Your New iPod--for Cheap!

The people who have said that they are only getting black and white by this method are correct. I tried my sony camcorder cable with my 5G ipod last night and only got a black and white picture. I tried it with a home cinema projector and a data projector, both with the same result. I don't understand this, as both the luminance (B&W) and chromiance (colour) signals are combined in a composite video signal. The display then applies filters to separate the signals out again. So either I should get a working colour picture or no picture at all. I have tried both PAL and NTSC and switched 'wide screen' on and off.

I'm worried that if I buy a cheap cable off ebay, that it will do the same thing, but I don't really want to spend 15 on the Apple cable. Does anyone have any idea why a supposedly composite signal won't display colour?
