I wanted to pass along an issue I had setting up my machine running Fedora Core 4 Linux to run Ruby (1.8.2), Rails (1.0.0), gems (0.8.11) and the MySQL gem. During the scaffolding process I got the following error message:


Lost connection to MySQL server during query: SHOW FIELDS FROM


which meant Rails wasn't connecting to my tables. It turns out this is a problem with the way gem installs the MySQL 'driver' on Fedora Core 4 -- it can't use the default gcc4, it requires gcc32. The solution to this can be found at:
