Even if you decide to use remote NFS mounts as the way to get your data, it is a good idea to use Amanda (http://amanda.zmanda.com/) as the backup tool. Amanda allows you to schedule and monitor your backup. It does incremental backups. Its holding disk provides efficient use of Tape drives. See amanda documentation at its wiki:
