I think there's been something of an inversion in how useful online-only communications are in terms of connecting with people. Ten years ago, most of the people I talked to online were those I met online, people who often lived in other parts of the country or world. These days everyone you know is on MySpace (or something similar) and we don't bother to get to know the complete strangers unless they share a really niche interest. Technology in general is no longer that kind of interest because so many people have already moved to the Bay Area or similar hubs to pursue it. It needs to be something you can't easily do for a living, like watching Project Runway.
