XML-RPC was designed to provide simple cross-platform distributed computing. It uses XML and remote procedure calls to communicate information from one server to another. A precursor to SOAP, it was developed in early 1998 by Dave Winer of Userland, Don Box of DevelopMentor, and Microsoft. The XML-RPC spec and implementations helped develop an awareness that XML was more than just a document format and could be used for standards-based transaction processing.
