From YouTube to the iPod

by Erica Sadun

Idol season is surely upon us. And I have received many letters begging me to reveal how to make copies of YouTube videos. Ace and Taylor, whoever you are, you are greatly admired by a large segment of female America. For these folks and for anyone else who's wondered how to archive YouTube video, here's the answer. Follow this quick step-by-step process for retrieving YouTube content to display on your Mac or iPod.

Well, everything works except neither VLC nor iSquint can open the resulting file. iSquint hangs up and VLC claims there is nothing to play. So, maybe these are coming down in yet another format that neither supports or I really do need some codec installed that I lack?

Did you rename it to .flv first? Are you sure it downloaded completely? You can actually open up a file in TextEdit and make sure you see FLV as the first few letters of the file. (Don't save it in TextEdit for somewhat obvious reasons.)

Yep. Followed all directions (tried both what was step-by-stepped here and I also tried the AppleScript). No love.

I am getting some of them to work with iSquint (and I am finding other sites on the net reporting that VLC won't play FLV files -- google videos especially but iSquint will convert them)... I'm using VLC 0.8.4 (fresh download today).

VLC 0.8.4 will not work with FLV. Step 5 links to 0.8.1

DOH, MY FLV FILES STILL DON'T PLAY ON THE O.8.1 VERSION OF VLC...WHEN I TRY TO SELECT VLC TO OPEN MY FLV FILE AFTER GOING TO GET INFO ON MY MAC, IT'S GREYED OUT. AND WHEN I TRY TO OPEN THE FLV FILE STRAIGHT FROM THE VLC CONTROLS, IT STILL WON'T PLAY. SOMEBODY HELP ME PLEASE...

This used to work for me but they seem to have altered the system lately, and this URL trick doesn't work anymore.

Hi. Thanks for the tip, but it just don't work. I write the address you provide in step 2, adding the ID, then when I press Enter nothing happens: just an empty page, no file downloaded.
What I do wrong?

Using Firefox and VideoDownloader (http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php), I'm able to download those videos on YouTube and Google Video. Then, I convert them using iSquint, and transfer them to iTunes.
Cheers :)
