JavaFX Showcase: Should you care to see it?

by Shashank Tiwari

JavaFX.com is up and running! The problem is that it doesn't work well on most browsers. The small fonts are unreadable when viewed in FireFox or Safari. The site takes a long time to load up. The only thing notable is the transition from one window/panel to the other. Considering almost everybody else can do this as well, I am a little confused what to look at and be impressed about :)

Maybe, I should be happy there is finally something there and not just vapourware, like we saw at last JavaOne.

For a second, lets take a look at what competition's got :

Flex Showcase
Silverlight Showcase

Now you tell me, if Sun should have waited to get this all trim and proper or am I missing something out here?

The site appears to be down now, but I did manage to get in earlier. A quick firebug showed it to be DHTML not an applet.

@Nick .. Javafx.com is just plain AJAX and the video on it is Quicktime :P .. so its no showcase of the technology.

@Shashank one would think that they could at least get AJAX right but ya .. its UGLY !

I posted a video (recorded by Dion Almaier) of an example that was shown at JavaOne and also shared some thoughts and questions in a blog post if and would appreciate everyone's thoughts ..

The silverlight showcase link causes multiple "illegal operation in plug-in" messages to appear in Firefox on my PC :)

@Jonathan Oh .. it happens on a PC too ? ... I thought it was just my Mac and Safari .. It doesn't happen on Windows+IE... I've had a post about this for several days now .. tells you lot about their cross platform commitment

@Shashank sorry about the plugs, they just seem relevant

JavaFX.com is a total failure. The web designer should be fired immediately IMO.

I expect to see a demo to show me a portal site or a corporate application using JavaFx. But werid. I could not find any demo. After a couple of minutes, I give up and use google instead. There are few. However, even the most impressive demo (Canoo Music Pinboard) looks like a toy.

It is a cool website with nice user interface, but it is very slow in Firefox 3.0 beta 5 in Ubuntu Linux.

The first impression I get from he site, is the same annoyances I get from sites that throws adds in my face... untill I realized that the large box covering the content is actually part of the design. It's pretty, but hardly functional. Not sure why Sun thinks they can beat Adobe at their own game.
