New Mac Developer Business Model?

by Oliver Breidenbach

From the "Wish I had thought of that" department: My Dream App. Casting for Mac Apps. The bad ideas are voted out and the winners will be developed by star engineers Austin Sarner (AppZapper), Jason Harris (ShapeShifter), and Martin Ott (SubEthaEdit) and shepherded to success by Mac luminaries Guy Kawasaki, David Pogue, Kevin Rose and even Steve Wozniak himself.

Not a woman in sight. Even if they didn't feel like asking for help from one of the admittedly few female Mac developers, still, no women in the judging or on the 'staff'? Web developers, UI mavens, pixel pushers, writers, even podcasters -- couldn't find even one gal? It's a shame they've taken their 'fanboy' moniker so literally. And for the record? *These* are folks who have earned the title 'star engineers' http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/testimonials/ . (And look! There's even a woman!)

Funny how the one woman you point on on that page used to be a man. (Not kidding.)

Does it really matter? Does not including a woman for PC's sake make it a less interesting idea? Maybe they couldn't find a fangirl who was prepared to spend all her time on that...

I do reserve the right to call "Star Engineer(TM)" whomever I like. ;-)

No, not including women doesn't make it a less-interesting idea. But the fact that there are no women and no people of color (that I saw) involved with the project does point to the likelihood that the priorities will be based on the needs and wants of twenty-something (or thereabouts) white boys, or what they *think* is important to people not like them. Including the voices and opinions of people of various backgrounds is not a matter of political correctness, it's a matter of diversity.

I can consent to that. But it is called "MyDreamApp". So, of course, it will be based on the wants of the "me" and not on the wants or needs of society. And maybe that is not so bad. Original ideas are seldom developed by commitee.
