Podcasting Battlestar, and remixing your TV

Boing Boing reports that the producers of Battlestar Galactica are making a podcast available that is designed to run at the same time as the show itself, so people can hear the producers' "making of" comments as the show plays. Great idea.

This is, of course, an unusually good match between audience and application. But I could imagine other uses of the same idea -- for instance, "Mystery Science" style overlays to current shows. I'd bet an O.C. remix would be popular.

What if I could download software made by a popular search engine company (let's call them "Moogle") called the "Moogle Remixbar" that would let me, while watching an episode of The O.C. or Battlestar Galactica or whatever, hear overlaid commentary or even things like "that shirt is from the Gap"?

Maybe the commentary comes from producers at Moogle, maybe the Remixbar lets me choose my own sources of commentary. But the commentary doesn't necessarily come from the producers of the show. (Presumable if Moogle's commentary or anyone else's is too annoying, I'll stop using it.)

Is there anything fundamentally different about the Moogle Remixbar that makes it less objectionable than the Google Toolbar? Or Greasemonkey for Firefox?

Cool idea, David. I'm not getting involved in the whole "is google toolbar evil" conversation since I'm not a fan of it even without autolink. But I like the idea of a remixbar!

That's nice . . . but this podcasting phenomenon is going to leave those of us who are deaf out in the cold.

FWIW, Battlestar Galactica is closed captioned . . . it'd be nice if we all could be let in on what the producers are thinking as well.

Good point. If they're reading from scripts, they could use something like Serious Magic to make a text version of the podcast with screenshots in the right places.
