QuickTime 6 Unleashes MPEG-4 and AAC

by Derrick Story

Apple has quietly announced the Public Preview of QuickTime 6. Their low key approach to QT6 shows just how good things are in Cupertino these days, because this latest version of the venerable multimedia Swiss Army Knife is definitely a big deal.

Two breakthrough technologies are part of this package: MPEG-4 and Advanced Audio Coding (AAC). I've seen MPEG-4, and its quality and compactness are astonishing. As for AAC, it might be the first audio technology to seriously challenge MP3.

And the best part is, you can start playing with these new tools today. The QT 6 Preview is available for Mac 8.6/9, Mac OS X 10.1.3 and later, and Win 98/NT/ME/2000/XP. The free download is 10 MBs.

Don't forget Broadcaster!
Actually, I'm as excited by the newly released Apple Broadcast software as I am by QT6 and MPEG4. This release underlines that Apple is serious about media, serving, and media serving. Very exciting.

FWIW, the Broadcast software works flawlessly, and is positioned like iMovie - does what it does very well, but doesn't have the more advanced features.
