SCO's Upcoming Tour

by Dee-Ann LeBlanc

So, SCO is going on tour like they're some kind of rock band. My first reaction to learning this was, "Oh, the protests we could have!" But then the wet pillow of truth smacked me over the head. That's exactly what they want.

SCO wants media attention. Even the slowest among us has hopefully figured that out by now. They especially like media attention that, at the same time, makes the open source community look bad. I can just see the spin on the protests now. "See, these Linuz zealots are so determined to steal our IP that they're interfering with our business!"

Let's not give them any help. However, at the same time, I WOULD like to use this as a catalyst to get the real word out. How to do this without helping SCO? I'm still pondering. For one thing, I'll revamp my SCO fighting press kit so it's more up to date and friendlier. From there, perhaps as a community, we could deluge the media in the cities SCO is going to with FRIENDLY submissions of this kit to the technology and other reporters, with explanation that we are trying to help them see "both sides" before they too become a part of SCO's "dupe the media to pump our stocks and convince people to buy our licenses" campaign.

I'm open to other constructive ideas, here. SCO is no doubt counting on ill thought out vigalante actions to get them more press during the tour. Let's instead, as a community, rise to the occasion and stick in a little penguin pin, bursting their bubble.

What are your constructive ideas?

Linux/OS Tour
How about a concurrent Linux/OS tour that would go the same places that SCO goes, stealing or co-opting their thunder? This could even be done by local Linux user groups.

What a great idea! I'm even a member of one of the LUGs that's in one of the tour cities!

Glad you like it. Mayhap the news to do this should get out to even more people. Maybe you should post it to Slashdot?

Better yet, it's about to go up as a formal proposal on another site. I'll post the link when it's ready. :)

Yes, a great idea; hopefully it can be carried out. I like the idea of energetically putting out our side to the press, combined with staging a serious Linux conference in each tour city at the same time as the SCO event. I wonder to what extent the Linux event should acknowledge or respond to the SCO situation? It would be most fun if it did, of course. (I picture code viewing stations to help SCO-lovers and other proprietary types hunt for infringing code. Also contests to see how fast kernel code can be rewritten when it has to be. ;-)

Hehe. I figure it should only be about Linux, but the organizers should be prepared to answer the inevitable questions about SCO.

They're skipping us?!
I guess Washington DC really is insignificant, if SCO can't find us on the map.

Probably because the Government quit buying SCO back when they realized the Unix boat left the dock and SCO weren't on it.

Demonstrations are what SCO wants, and how many SCO employees can we effectively threaten to not employee...

On the other hand how about boycotting SCO users and customers. Certain large fast food chains come to mind.

I'm really trying hard to focus folks away from a demonstration. I'd like to see us put on a kick-butt Linux show instead and only even mention SCO if asked.

Boycotts only work if:

1. People actually do it
2. The companies feel threatened by the loss of business

Pondering if we could manage that.

Major Opportunity for Open Source
It seems to me that this tour is a major opportunity for Open Source. For the first time since this whole mess began, SCO representatives will be traveling to a jurisdiction near you to present their case. IANAL but I believe we need to get legal experts into these presentations to observe. Should SCO cross the line in any way, legal action can be taken locally.

If their road show yields a suit at every stop, which it may well do if they cross the legal line in any way, instead of getting the ammunition they were hoping for they will wind up with a major legal mess and several public black eyes.

Just my $0.02.

Why set up a press tour when SCO is already doing it? In other words, why seek out the interested press and get them all lined up when SCO is doing it for you?

Here's my suggestion: print up a nice-looking "greatest hits" from the SCO fighting press kit with the URL for the remainder, and hand it out to all the attendees at their press conferences that you can.

I recently read a book on feature writing by the Wall St. Journal's main former main writing coach, and one of his first rules is to look for conflict in a story and present both sides, because it can give you a story arc. Professional reporters want to know both sides of a story because conflicting quotes can make a story more interesting to read--especially in the high-tech world, where "news" is often a press release describing the point release upgrade of some product as a "groundbreaking paradigm shift." The SCO-fighting press kit is the kind of thing that reporters dream of because it makes their job so much easier: a sensible, accessible presentation of the opposing side's views.

The cities are a bit easterly, too - nothing west coast at all. Granted that my US geography isn't too good, but it looks like Chicago and Texas are as far west as they go.

Handing out Linux CDs would be great!
Hi Dee! One of the great things about this community, is that there are foot soldiers available all over the world. If some of those that plan on showing up at SCO's thang could take it upon themselves to burn a few CDs with their favorite distro(s) - clearly labelled just "LINUX" - and hand them out to attendees, much would be said, without words. No need for picketing, or confrontation of any kind, just a free CD handed out with a smile...

even better, just help sco customers to abandon it, and help concurrence firms to steal their customers!!

Could be useful to make a list with sco customers and their addresses and to send them to linux firms, better if they are not american (mandrake, conectiva, turbolinux ...). Probably they will do the rest stealing the customer from SCO.
