Sync a Windows Mobile PDA/Phone with a Mac using ActiveSync? With Parallels, you can...

by Todd Ogasawara

There are a number of cool Smartphone and Pocket PC Phone Edition devices out there that run Microsoft Windows Mobile 5: Palm Treo 700w, Motorola Q, T-Mobile SDA, T-Mobile MDA, etc. There are third party applications that let you sync them with a Mac running Mac OS X. Parallels just released a new Beta for Parallels Desktop for Mac that provides another option. One of the new features introduced with this beta is support for more USB devices including Windows Mobile 5 devices (Pocket PC, Pocket PC Phone Edition, and Smartphone). Of course, you need a licensed copy of Windows XP to try this. But, Windows Mobile 5 devices come bundled with Microsoft Outlook. So, if you have a Windows XP running as a Guest OS, you should have everything you need to test out Parallels' newfound Windows Mobile 5 device compatibility.

Of course, if you want to sync your device with your Mac apps (iCal, Address Book, etc.) rather than just with your Parallels Windows XP installation, you can use Missing Sync.

The next question is, how to transfer the syced info from the Windows guest OS to the Mac OS X host's software. Would simple file sharing be sufficient? Would any additional software be required in Mac OS X?

Missing Sync does not synchronize Notes and Tasks from Windows Mobile devices

Correction: Missing Sync does synchronize Tasks. But still no Notes.

But can you sync a wm5 mobile device with a PC that is not running outlook but does have access to a web-bsed or an ical calendar?

Missing Synch only works for Windows Mobile 5 if you're running OS 10.4. Anyone know of an application that works with 10.3.9?

I paste below my recent interchange with Parallels support tech, George Leary.
The solution to my problem may not help you with yours, but since it took me so long to figure out, I am posting it here.

Hello George,

Thanks for your suggestions. I installed the Beta upgrade.
It still failed to make a connection in Activesync (but DID connect to the
XP operating system, indicated by a little tone when USB devices are plugged
in. I also saw it appear in Parallels' Devices menu, and selected it.

I SOLVED THE PROBLEM AND YOU MAY WANT TO PASS THIS ON TO OTHERS TRYING TO
USE ACTIVESYNC:

When the Activesync window comes up and says "Connecting" forever, with the
green circle with arrows in it spinning, and never connects, it may be that
there is a dialog box that popped up BEHIND this window. How stupid is that?
It is smaller than this window, so unless you move the Activesync window out
of the way, you will never know it is there. The dialog says "This device is
protected with a password, please enter it." All I had to do was type in my
Windows Mobile 5 password that I use on the PDA, and then it connected fine
and synchronized fine.

I don't know whether the Beta of Parallels was necessary for this to work or
not.

I am delighted that it now works with my T-Mobile MDA, and would recommend
Parallels to anyone who asks about it.

Thanks,
Steve

Does it have to be Mac w/ intel inside or can you do it w previous versions that are OSX? I wonder, because I want to play my mobile phone game Shadow of Legend (http://www.shadowoflegend.com) from my mobile device on Mac (since this game is not yet compatiable w/ Mac yet).
